The painting is part of the series of works that Congdon executed in the spring of 1949 while his first solo exhibition was underway at the Betty Parsons Gallery. They marked a decisive leap in quality compared to the production of the previous year, so much so that some of them were included in the exhibition while still fresh from painting.
