The painting focuses on the mighty figure Mahakala represented standing with four arms on a prone man. The deity holds in his hands a skull-shaped cup and a ritual knife, on his head he wears a crown of skulls symbolising victory over death and ego. The upper part of the painting presents the sequence of the lineage masters of the practice of Panjarnata Mahakala while the side figures with animal faces surrounding him represent the guardians and assistants of the deity. They are entities that protect the Dharma and serve to subdue adverse forces and demons.
