Raymond Emile Waydelich Biography
Raymond-Émile Waydelich, born in 1938 in Strasbourg, is a renowned Franco-Alsatian artist who dedicates himself to painting, sculpture and assemblage making. Waydelich received his first artistic training as a sculptor in his father's workshop at the age of 14, before attending the Academy of Decorative Arts in Strasbourg. Waydelich is known for his extensive artistic output, which includes paintings, ceramic and bronze sculptures, assemblages, works on paper, and public art events. His style is characterized by the use of "objets trouvés", that is, everyday objects that the artist finds at flea markets and incorporates into his works. One of Waydelich's most famous works are watercolor collages in which creatures such as crocodiles, cats and pigs are depicted as ghosts within landscapes painted by the artist on ancient letters acquired during his travels. His style, which often takes inspiration from prehistoric cave paintings or Greek mythology, is close to fantastic realism. Waydelich's works are present in numerous public and private collections around the world and the artist is considered one of the best known and most representative of contemporary French art.
