Abraham Gerardus Van Velde was born on 19 October 1895 in Zoeterwoude, the Netherlands and was a Dutch painter known for a semi-representational painting style with intense, geometric colors. His artistic production, influenced by Tachisme and lyrical abstraction, is placed in a field that draws inspiration from both expressionism and surrealism, while in the 1960s it evolved towards abstract and expressive art. In his pictorial production of the 1950s, similarities emerge with the contemporary work of famous artists such as Matisse, Picasso and the abstract expressionist Adolph Gottlieb. Van Velde had the support of numerous French-language writers, including Samuel Beckett and the poet André du Bouchet, which contributed to him being considered a member of the School of Paris. Van Velde died on 28 December 1981 in Grimaud, France.
