Production

Achille Perilli's artistic production is anchored to the first abstract/informal research movements of the post-war period which found fertile ground in various Italian cities, giving rise to real movements such as the MAC in the Como area, Classical Abstractionism in Florence and Forma1 in Rome of which he was co-founder.

Fellow student of Piero Dorazio and tireless theorist and organizer of cultural events, he initially stood out, in the 1950s and 1960s, for a purely informal sign pattern. Its iconography then changes starting from the 1970s, acquiring greater definition of chromaticisms, thus defining a more distinctly geometric and two-dimensional system.

Perilli also participated in four Venice biennials.

How to evaluate a work by Perilli

The necessary condition to be able to start an evaluation process of a work by Perilli is the certainty of its authenticity which can be confirmed exclusively by the certification issued by the Achille Perilli Archive, in Largo Arenula in Rome, directed by his daughter Nadja Perilli.

Other elements that must be considered are the specific historical context of execution of the work, the technical characteristics, the provenance, any publications and exhibitions and last but not least, a specific examination of the state of conservation.

Reconstructing the history of a work in detail always guarantees greater commercial attention, especially in the presence of authoritative provenances from galleries and collections or official publications. The general catalog published by Silvana in 2019 by Giuseppe Apella is a fundamental consultation tool for comparisons and checks.

In the case of multiple works (printed on paper, canvas or sculpted), the edition and print run must also be considered, from which the quality and overall number of copies created are identified.

Brackets and coefficient

Once authenticity has been ascertained, data on past sales of works similar to the one being evaluated for historical, technical and qualitative characteristics must be traced. Such data can be extrapolated with an expert eye from catalogues, specific databases and auction house awards, as well as from private and gallery sales which only the experience of the professional appraiser can analyse.

In light of these considerations we can identify some scales and evaluation parameters that will allow us to define a detailed and reliable indication of value.

Usually the sum of these factors is indicated with the name of coefficient which is nothing other than a numerical index expressed in points which will be multiplied by the dimensions of the work (identified in the sum of the base and height) to be evaluated. Clearly only the intervention of an expert evaluator will be able to determine whether or not the operation is valid.

Market

Perilli's performance over the last ten years has been characterized by a constant growth trend which had its greatest peaks in 2021, reporting a record price of 70,000 euros. The works of the informal period (the '50s and '60s) are the most sought after by the market as well as the most expensive, while those of the subsequent periods are in great demand on the market given an extremely stable demand for artistic production referring to a more accessible. This condition indicates a moment of good maturity in the prices of Perilli's works and a still lively state of demand. Given the historical and cultural consistency of the artist and his continued presence on the market, there is no reason to think that it cannot be a good investment in the long term, but given the recent developments the current moment is ideal for sale, especially for those he purchased in previous and more favorable market phases or he inherited.

Achille Perilli Biography

Achille Perilli (Rome, 1927). After graduating in Literature, he founded the Gruppo Arte Sociale (GAS) together with Piero Dorazio, Guerrini, Vespignani, Buratti, Muccini, Maffioletti, Perilli; the magazines “Ariele” and “La Fabbrica”, and with Dorazio and Guerrini the Bookshop-Gallery “Age d’Or”. It therefore launches a series of cultural events including the collaboration with the Milan Triennale. In 1962 he organized a solo exhibition at the Venice Biennale, and subsequently numerous exhibitions around the world (New York, Prague, Amsterdam, Chicago, Tokyo). In 1977 he joined Coopertarte with other artists, a cooperative that seeks a new relationship with the public. From a stylistic point of view his works are considered as an expression of geometric abstractionism, they are dominated by compositions of irregular figures and very bright colours.
