Ladislav Novák (Turnov, 4 August 1925 – Třebíč, 28 July 1999) was a Czech poet and painter, Czechoslovakian until 1993. After studying at the University of Prague, he began writing surrealist poems (in 1968 he published a collection, Textamenty), and then used onomatopoeia more frequently. Around the sixties, together with colleagues Jiří Kolář and Josef Hiršal, he attempted a sort of "experimental poetry": among other poems, the 1969 publication stands out, The liquefaction of the geometer Descartes and his subsequent life in the liquid state. His works - in addition to writing, Novák painted several paintings - clashed with the communist regime, even in his own Czechoslovakia, finding greater success in Western Europe and the United States of America.
