Mimmo Germanà was born in Catania in 1944 and died in Busto Arsizio in 1992 at just 48 years old. Having moved to Rome after his classical studies, Mimmo Germanà, a self-taught painter by training, after a debut linked to the conceptual season, emerged in the early 1980s with the Transavantgarde. He took part in the Venice Biennale in 1980, in the “Aperto '80” section, which was curated by Achille Bonito Oliva and Harald Szeemann. In 1987 he won the Gallarate Prize. Numerous personal exhibitions held in private art galleries, which document his intense activity since 1970. After his death, in addition to the numerous group exhibitions, mention should be made of the exhibitions dedicated to him in 1994 in Gibellina at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Orestiadi Foundation, curated by Achille Bonito Oliva and in Verona at the Boxart Gallery. In 2005 in Palermo "Mimmo Germanà Sul sofa" at the Prati Gallery and in Messina "Mimmo Germanà – Naturae Paintings on canvas" at the Francochancelliere Gallery. In 2008 the exhibition dedicated to the artist at the Regional Archaeological Museum of Agrigento. In 2010 in Milan "Mimmo Germanà Paths of a rebellious imagination" at the Galleria Vinciana. On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary, exhibitions that paid homage to the artist from Catania took place in 2012 both in Catania and Milan, presenting to the public, according to different curatorial orientations, a selection of works from his intense artistic production that perpetuate his memory . "Mimmo Germanà. Tra Cielo e Terra" took place in Catania, at the Side-a modern art gallery.
