Domenico Cantatore (Ruvo di Puglia, 1906 - Paris, 1998). He moved to Milan in 1924, joined the Corrente artistic group and in 1929 held his first solo show at the Galleria Milano. In 1932 he moved to Paris and learned about impressionist painting and the art of Picasso and the Fauves. He dedicated himself to drypoint engraving and in 1934 exhibited his works at the Galleria il Milione. In the following years, he participated in the Venice Biennale, the Bergamo Prize and the Rome Quadrennial. In 1940 he was a teacher of figure drawing at the Art School and in 1950 he obtained the chair of Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Brera. The first period of his artistic production, until 1948, dealt with subjects of an intimate nature, influenced by the French tradition, in a second moment he created works linked to realism and expressionism, with social accents. The Odalisque series is famous, but also the landscapes and figures of poor people from the south.
