Joseph Beuys (Krefeld, 1921 - Dusseldorf, 1986). Spokesman of Conceptual Art of the second half of the twentieth century. At the end of the thirties he became interested in sculpture, after having attended scientific studies. In 1940 he joined the air force as a fighter pilot. In 1953 he held his first solo exhibition and the following year he opened a studio in Dusseldorf, creating drawings and small sculptures on commission. In 1961, after a profound personal crisis due to the experience of war, he obtained the professorship of monumental sculpture at the Kunstakademie in Dusseldorf. In 1962 he came into contact with George Maciunas and Nam June Paik, with whom he participated in Fluxus events. The subsequent works are installations - sculptures, made with materials such as felt and fat. In 1964 he organized the first Actions and subsequently created the first exhibitions. In 1976 he exhibited at the Venice Biennale, in 1979 an important retrospective was organized at the Guggenheim in New York.
